New laser scanner
In iRacing by William Marsh January 7, 2015
News on the iRacing front has been relatively short, but we have a new announcement today that will be significant for the future! The iRacing development team has purchased a new laser scanner, that should be able to cut scanning time in half. The new laser scanner is the Leica ScanStation C10, which features a 360 degree scanning range, as opposed to the previous scanner’s 180. That means that you only need to scan half as much as before, thereby halving scan time. An example that cars would normally take six hours to scan with the old scanner, while the new one would do it in 3-4.
Their first test of the scanner will be scanning new trucks for the C Class oval series. The Tundra and Chevrolet Silverado will be scanned this coming week. One thing that will certainly make their job easier is that they can now put the scanner inside the car. The other one was too large to fit in the car. This should lead to them scanning the vehicle much quicker, and getting it to us sooner.
One thought I had was that the iRacing team took around 2 weeks to scan Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It would be remarkable to see upcoming circuits, like Croft and the new Lime Rock Park, scanned in a much quicker timeframe. Could this lead to us getting more cars and tracks in the future?
